How to Catch Up With Latest Tech Developments

As your developer career goes on, you all of a sudden realize that staying up-to-date with the latest news is important yet so difficult. We live in times where every other day there is a new framework coming out or even a programing language.

But then you might ask yourself, how do I keep up with everything? Where do I get all the latest information from? So with this article, I am going to try and help you with that.

Social Media

If you are like “most people”, you probably spend around 5-3 hours a day on average scrolling through social media. We are all “addicted” to our phones in some way.

But we can turn this so-called “addiction” to be in our favor!

Choose your cards

Depending on your favorite social media platform, there are always some great groups that are worth following!

Let’s pick the blue card, Facebook! I mostly use the “groups” feature. let’s start with the list:

• Javascript – An International group for JS developers where you can ask & share your knowledge.
• JS-Secrets – JS “under the hood”, with a lot of cool posts (for example, how do Promises work behind the scenes).
• Software Development Mastery – Helping highly motivated people break into the software development field and become rock-star developers.
• CSS Class – Same as the Israeli group but then more for EN speakers.
• Create Awesome Vue.js Apps With Nuxt.js – This is a group where you can discuss Vue.js and Nuxt.js with the “Create Awesome Vue.js App” course!
• CSS Masters Israel (EN&HE) – A place for CSS developers to share their knowledge.
• Vue.js Israel (HE) – Asking questions & knowledge sharing all around Vue.
• JavaScript Israel (HE) – A place for Israeli JavaScripters to share knowledge

Since I am coming from Israel, some of the groups that I follow are also in Hebrew. But with Facebook supporting translation out of the box (which is not that bad) I am sure that any of you can benefit from these groups. One of my favorite things about these groups is that you can raise questions there, stay updated with the latest news, and most importantly keep yourself focused on useful things rather than endless news. You are at least feeding yourself with content that is there to help you!

My next card is going to be the red one. As I like to learn through watching, I will share here a list of youtube channels I follow and subscribed to (this time, all of them are EN based from now on):

• Fireship (High-intensity ⚡ code tutorials to help you build & ship your app faster. Subscribe for new videos every week covering intermediate to advanced lessons about JavaScript, Flutter, Firebase, and modern app development).
• Eric Elliott (Tech product and platform advisor, author of “Composing Software”, co-founder of EricElliottJS.com and DevAnywhere.io, and dev team mentor. He has contributed to software experiences for Adobe Systems, Zumba Fitness, The Wall Street Journal, ESPN, BBC, and top recording artists including Usher, Frank Ocean, Metallica, and many more).
• Jack Herrington (Frontend videos from basic to very advanced; tutorials, technology deep dives. You’ll love it! I love his Micro-Frontend videos).
• The Net Ninja (Black-belt your web development skills. Over 1000 free programming tutorials).
• JSConf (JSConf is a series of JavaScript conferences from around the world and here they release the conference talk videos for free as fast as we can after every event).
• Honeypot (This channel produces documentaries exploring tech culture, influential technologies, and untold developer stories from around the world. Check out stories around open source, careers and all the other cool stuff developers are doing over at cult, our media platform).

Twitter

I am out of cards to choose from, but we will still move on 😆. Who doesn’t like that little bird, right? Here are my top 5 people&pages I follow:

• Evan You – Vue.js creator, following for updates & admiration.

• V8 – Google’s high-performance open-source JavaScript and WebAssembly engine.

Besides listing to my podcast (😏), I also listen to the following:

• Syntax.fm – A Tasty Treats Podcast for Web Developers.
• CodePen Radio – CodePen is used by Web Developers everywhere as a way to showcase and share demo code. That said, this podcast is actually run by Codepen employees.

Summary

Some of you may be overwhelmed by the number of resources I have mentioned. But even I don’t read all of them. I just make sure I am surrounded by relevant resources and not wasting my time on unnecessary ones.
